R.J. MacReady's (Kurt Russell) hat from John Carpenter's The Thing. MacReady wore his signature hat when he had to venture out from the research station into the freezing Antarctic climate.

The Thing is widely considered a staple title in the horror genre and has been hugely influential on science-fiction and horror filmmaking. In particular, its rendering of the titular extraterrestrial has been hailed as a touchstone in the history of practical effects, while star Kurt Russell's performance has also been considered among the best of his multiple collaborations with director John Carpenter.

This brown felt hat originated from a credited crew member to whom it was gifted by Russell following production. More recently, the hat was included in the Museum of Pop Culture's (MoPOP) "Scared to Death: The Thrill of Horror Film" exhibit in Seattle, Washington.

The hat features a tall four-dent crown and wide brim with each side bent up, and includes both brown leather and yellow and grey woven cord hat bands, a brown leather sweatband with a size tag reading "7 1/8," and a brown leather chin strap. The hat exhibits some wear from use and age, including small holes, additional warping to the shape, and pilling to the felt.

Additional Provenance: Letter of Authenticity from the family of the crew member gifted the hat by Russell as well as three personal photographs from the family.
