The Terminator's (Arnold Schwarzenegger) screen- and photo-matched distressed punk jacket from James Cameron's The Terminator. The Terminator stole his jacket from an unfortunate punk when he arrived from the future in the year 1984. The cyborg wore it for the first half of the film, until it was too riddled with bullet holes after his confrontation with Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn). Bloodstains on the jacket's lapels match it to the scene where the T-800 made repairs to his arm (while also matching behind-the-scenes photos of Schwarzenegger having make-up effects applied to his arm). This is the last scene in which the Terminator wore the jacket, as he then switches to a less damaged black leather jacket. Although a clear match could only be established with that scene, the jacket may have been used in other scenes in the film as well.
While not Schwarzenegger's first big box-office hit (Conan the Barbarian was released two years prior), The Terminator made him a global star and he subsequently appeared as a Terminator five more times in feature films. It was also director James Cameron's first major hit and only his second movie, before he went on to become the second-highest-grossing film director of all time.
The Terminator's punk jacket is the most memorable wardrobe piece in the film, worn throughout the Terminator's relentless pursuit of Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and featured in such key moments as the famous Tech Noir club scene. The Terminator's punk ensemble was the first ensemble worn onscreen by the iconic character. It established a tradition of Terminators stealing the costumes or styles of unsuspecting, often loud-mouthed civilians whenever they traveled to the past.
The gray M-65 Field cotton jacket has been elaborately customized by the costume department. It features a leather collar and is decorated with metal chains over the left shoulder and metal studs on the back. It is intentionally distressed, with multiple bullet holes, burns, stage blood and tears.
Estimate: $75,000 - 150,000
