Andy Dufresne's (Tim Robbins) State of Maine letter and mailing label from Frank Darabont's The Shawshank Redemption. After longtime librarian Brooks Hatlen (James Whitmore) was paroled, Dufresne took charge of Shawshank State Penitentiary's neglected library and began writing weekly letters to the Maine state legislature requesting funds for books. The state's response of a token $200 check and book donations intended to end his campaign only spurred Dufresne to write twice as often, and the library was eventually transformed through his persistent advocacy.
This lot originates from Planet Hollywood. It consists of a black-and-white typewritten letter dated "July 21, 1955" from "State Controller J.H. McAlahney" to "Mr. Dufresne," a mailing label from the Department of Finance and Administration, and a State of Maine Department of Finance and Administration envelope addressed to "A. Dufresne" with a stamp and post mark dated "21 Jul 1955." This lot shows wear consistent with on-set use, handling, and age. Dimensions: (largest) 8.5" x 11" (21.75 cm x 28 cm)
