The Rocketeer's (Bill Campbell) costume with a screen-matched hero helmet and screen-matched jacket from Joe Johnston's The Rocketeer. After he discovered an experimental rocket-pack designed by Howard Hughes (Terry O'Quinn), pilot Cliff Secord wore his signature rocket-pack with his specially-designed helmet and costume as the heroic Rocketeer throughout the film. His helmet was dinged by a bullet when he met with Neville Sinclair (Timothy Dalton) at Griffith Observatory to trade his pack for Jenny Blake (Jennifer Connelly), and again when Sinclair's Frankenstein-like henchman Lothar (Tiny Ron Taylor) clubbed him with a wrench aboard Sinclair's blimp.
Intentional points of distress on the front of this crested, foam-padded resin hero helmet screen-match to the climactic blimp fight scene. It is marked "D" with leather and nylon straps, tinted urethane eye lenses spray-painted gold and brass, and a lacquered metallic finish, as well as its original quilted fabric lining on the interior (stunt helmets were also made, but in a slightly different manner). The helmet is intentionally dented and scuffed on one side by production to appear bullet-hit.
Additionally, distinctive creasing in the leather of this jacket with a bib front screen-matches to when Secord crash-landed into a lake during his and A. "Peevy" Peabody's (Alan Arkin) first test flight of the pack. It was originally worn by Campbell in the sequence, then likely redesignated for use by stunt performer Michael Sarna, as indicated by hand-markings reading "Sarna Reg" and "MICHAEL SARNA REGULAR" on the interior.
Also included are a pair of leather fingerless gloves, one of which is hand-numbered "609037" and applied with a Walt Disney Studios Property Dept. label numbered "117168"; a pair of fireproofed khaki pyrotechnic stunt pants tagged "De Luna Regular Fit Fireproof" and labeled "De Luna Reg. Fire Fireproof" and "MDL" for stuntman Michael De Luna; and a pair of leather Dehner Boot Company boots hand-numbered "24970 10D" and "24971 10D," respectively.
The gloves are both equipped with ignition buttons designed to connect to and operate an SFX rocket-pack capable of emitting flames via attached nozzles when pressed. One of the gloves retains its original cord and nozzle, while the other's cord was cut following production, rendering it nonfunctional. Also included to complete the costume are a pair of brown leather replica gloves designed to be worn underneath the ignition-equipped fingerless gloves. The jacket exhibits some tarnishing to its finish, while the leather exhibits water damage around the collar, grime on the chest, and scuffing from production wear.
