An extraordinary seven-cel setup featuring the Boogie Man and his Nightmare Monsters from The Powerpuff Girls episode "Boogie Frights" (Season 1, Episode 11, 1998), directed by Genndy Tartakovsky. This vivid and characterful setup captures the disco-loving villain and his eerie henchmen in a perfectly choreographed pose, accompanied by the original camera layout drawing used to plan the sequence.
"Boogie Frights" remains one of the standout episodes of The Powerpuff Girls, a playful homage to classic horror and disco culture. The Boogie Man, who attempts to cast the world into eternal night so he can dance forever, is one of the show's most eccentric villains, and this setup captures the surreal tone and graphic energy that define the series.
Created at Cartoon Network Studios with cel production handled by Rough Draft Korea, this is a prime example of the vibrant design, expressive character work, and mid-century modern influence that made The Powerpuff Girls an instant cult classic.
This multi-layered composition consists of seven separate production cels, each meticulously hand-painted on acetate to create the final image. In animation, multiple cels are used to achieve depth and motion, with only a few select combinations preserved in complete setups like this one. The fact that this cel arrangement directly matches its corresponding camera layout sketch makes it especially rare and desirable.
The camera layout drawing, created under the director's supervision, defines the exact framing, camera angle, and action cues used during filming. These sketches were central to production but rarely left the studio, making their survival alongside the cels a special find for collectors.
Original multi-cel setups with matching camera layouts from key episodes are exceedingly scarce, and this example represents one of the most complete and character-rich surviving pieces from the show's early run. Dimensions (cel setup): 27.75 cm x 33 cm (11" x 13"); (drawing): 26.75 cm x 31.5 cm (10.5" x 12.5")
