Two preliminary drawings for an illustration titled "The Cantina," both hand-drawn and annotated by Ralph McQuarrie for Kevin J. Anderson and Rebecca Moesta's The Mos Eisley Cantina Pop-Up Book. Considered the foremost artist from the Star Wars franchise, McQuarrie also contributed original art for the book.

Select McQuarrie illustrations were developed during production on George Lucas' original Star Wars trilogy, with designs for the memorable Mos Eisley Cantina first seen in artworks created during pre-production on A New Hope. Rendered in graphite and colored pencils on tissue paper, these preliminary sketches depict several recognizable alien species, including a Rodian, a Twi'lek, and an Aqualish, as well as multiple droids. The smaller sketch is also hand-annotated "pg 47 Alien r." and "pg 54 ALien races" [sic] by McQuarrie. McQuarrie's process frequently began with a drawing on vellum that he could later re-trace onto an illustration board to begin a painting.

Both sketches are also featured on page 360 of the Abrams publication Star Wars Art: Ralph McQuarrie. They exhibit staining, tears in their corners, and some missing pieces of paper. Dimensions: (largest) 10" x 10" (25.5 cm x 25.5 cm)
