A Ralph McQuarrie hand-drawn sketch for illustration depicting life in Jabba the Hutt's palace from author Kevin J. Anderson's 1995 book "The Illustrated Star Wars Universe." This collection of new concept art from the 1990s with re-purposed designs from the original trilogy compiled to focus on eight in-universe planets. The sketch appears in Star Wars Art: Ralph McQuarrie Volume II by Brandon Alinger, Wade Lageosem, and David Mandel on page 294, while the finished illustration appears in the "Tatooine" section of Star Wars: The Illustrated Universe by McQuarrie and Kevin J. Anderson pages 26-27.
McQuarrie is widely considered one of the seminal Star Wars artists, having designed the look of Darth Vader, C-3PO, R2-D2, and countless other elements of the original film. McQuarrie was one of Lucas' first collaborators on Star Wars and created numerous concept sketches and production paintings that were used to convey Lucas' vision to those working on the film, and were later used to market it. McQuarrie's paintings were published in portfolios well-known to Star Wars collectors.
This sketch, depicting life in the staff quarter levels of the palace, is rendered in graphite and outlined in coloured pencil on vellum. McQuarrie did line drawings on vellum and then traced over them to transfer outlines to illustration board when creating his paintings. This lot exhibits discolouration and tearing along the edges. Dimensions: 28 cm x 21.5 cm (11" x 8.5")
