Livius' (Stephen Boyd) screen-matched Roman Centurion cuirass from

Anthony Mann's historical epic The Fall of the Roman Empire. General Gaius Livius wore this cuirass in the opening sequences of the film. This lot comes from the archives of the Italian costume company Costumi d'Arte.

The cuirass screen-matches by its distinctive marks and dents on the shoulder lapel to the scene in which Livius arrives at the Roman fortress on the Danube frontier. It was later reused in the production of Terry Jones' biblical comedy Monty Python's Life of Brian. While this cuirass style is not seen on screen, it appears in a behind-the-scenes photograph featuring John Cleese.

This leather cuirass is adorned with ornate metal symbols and details, and is scalloped at the shoulders and waist. It features an internal Peruzzi costume label beside "CO 15" handwritten in black marker and

"1650" handwritten on a label in black ink.

This lot comes from the archives of the famed Italian costume company Costumi d'Arte. The company has been supplying some of the biggest film productions in the world with costumes for over 100 years.
