The episode "Safe" (201), introduced an elite "Force Recon" team of four Martian Marines serving on the Martian Navy Ship the "Scirocco" and led by Gunnery Sgt. Roberta "Bobbie" Draper. The Marines in this unit were trained to wear and operate the heavy "Goliath Powered Armor" suits featured in the series. All four members were first seen during the episode in full Goliath suit armor performing a training drill on a Martian crater.
Working closely with the Expanse production team, Legacy Effects custom built Goliath power armor suits and helmets for each of these characters in the Force Recon unit. The complex Goliath suits required up to three crew members to get each actor ready for filming. Pieces of armor were applied directly onto the under-suit layer using hook and loop; armor pieces incorporated both foam rubber and leather for actor flexibility.
Scenes on the Sirocco during the episodes "Home" (201) and "Static" (203) established character dynamics, showing Corporal Sa'id and Sgt. Draper falling short of managing tensions in the locker room while the characters repaired, maintained, and charged their outer suits. Private Hillman, the daughter of a rich Martian terraforming family, instigated arguments in their unit, often directed towards earth-born Private Travis. Hillman wore her Goliath Suit when she was killed alongside Sa'id and Travis in the attack by the Caliban Hybrid on Ganymede in the episode "Paradigm Shift" (206). The ease with which the Hybrid tore apart the nearly indestructible Martian armor highlighted the danger inherent in utilizing the protomolecule. In the season 6 episode "Force Projection" (603) members of another Force Recon unit, including Barclay, wore their helmets when boarding Ceres Station in a combined UN/Martian effort to control the station while providing humanitarian aid to the Belter residents.
