The Terminator's (Arnold Schwarzenegger) autographed motorcycle jacket from James Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The Terminator wore its trademark biker jacket throughout the film after it was sent back in time to protect the Resistance's future leader, John Connor (Edward Furlong).
As the Terminator endured repeated battles with the T-1000 (Robert Patrick), his jacket became increasingly damaged, ultimately appearing in a severely shredded state during the climactic steel-mill sequence. This particular jacket is without its left sleeve in relation to the film's finale, in which most of the Terminator's left arm is torn away. The effect was achieved through a practical, in-camera gag: a prop arm dressed with the jacket’s sleeve was secured to Schwarzenegger's body, while his real arm was tucked behind his back.
This jacket was uniquely modified to accommodate that "stump" rig, allowing the leather-dressed prop arm to pass cleanly and seamlessly through the jacket's open side, as well as be easily installed and removed from Schwarzenegger. This approach reflects the ingenuity of the film's practical effects team and the hands-on filmmaking style that defined director Cameron's work of the era.
The jacket is made of thick black leather with three zipped pockets and one popper pocket on the front. It features black interior lining with purple vents, a fastened zip closure, and leather laces threaded from hip to armpit along a vent at each side. The jacket's inner-lining is fixed in with fastening strips to facilitate the installation of squibs.
Schwarzenegger has autographed the jacket's left breast with a thick, silver-coloured permanent marker. The garment's material has been cut, torn, and burnt to reflect the rigours of the Terminator, and shows numerous additional signs of production wear.
Also included with the lot is a Letter of Authenticity signed by the President of Carolco Licensing and dated "January 1992." Carolco Licensing was a division of the larger Carolco brand that produced the film. The letter comes held in a period Carolco envelope, with a compliments slip from British Sky Broadcasting marked "Congratulations!" - suggesting the jacket was originally a contest giveaway prize shortly after the film's release.
The autographs in this lot have been professionally authenticated by expert Garry King; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.
