A female VFX bust from Jonathan Mostow's sci-fi thriller Surrogates. In the near future, people live their lives free of pain, danger and complications through robotic representations of themselves, called surrogates.
This piece is the only one built by Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger's famous effects house, KNB EFX, especially for Surrogates. It is constructed from a dense foam underbody with a silicone skin. The eyes are prosthetic-grade glass inserts, the teeth are dental acrylic, and the hair is hand-punched.
This piece was fully brought to life via computer-generated visual effects in post-production. Instead of an all-CG or all-practical approach, Jonathan Mostow blended the two techniques to create a tactile realism in the finished shot. This piece comes in two parts - the lifelike human face detached, with the character's head and shoulders (wearing a black vest top) behind it, robotic face exposed. Both pieces are mounted on a wooden display with the film's name on it. There is a cut on the left side of the silicone nose. Dimensions: 42 cm x 48 cm x 77 cm (16.5" x 19" x 30.25")
