A model miniature of a crystalline Kryptonian starship from Richard Donner's superhero film Superman. Jor-El (Marlon Brando) placed his son Kal-El in an Earth-bound starship to save him from the destruction of his homeworld Krypton. This miniature was used for filming shots of the ship's launch, as well as distance shots of the ship bearing Kal-El away to Earth, including for spinning effects as the starship hurtled away from the dying Krypton. In 2017 was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress' National Film Registry.
The model was built for the film by Derek Meddings, the British special effects legend known for his work on Gerry Anderon's "Supermarionation" projects, the James Bond film franchise, and Tim Burton's Batman. Meddings and his team received a Special Achievement Academy Award for Visual Effects for their work on the film.
This model miniature comprises a cluster of acrylic spikes radiating from a central hub of smaller crystalline rods among a mass of downy material.
The model also features an original mounting tube, used during filming to move the miniature along a line, as well as metal rod supports which run alongside two of the larger spikes. Adhered to each spike are small segments of black 3M Scotchlite material, which produce a reflective effect under lighting. The miniature is mounted to a custom museum display stand.
The model has been sympathetically restored: three spikes have been replaced, using the original mounting points to ensure correct repositioning following the restoration of the soft fibreglass core. The original fibreglass material used to create the downy central mass has been removed, as it could not be cleaned, and a replacement material added. The original fibreglass material is included in the lot, and comes separate to the spaceship. Full documentation regarding the restoration can be made available upon request. Dimensions: 58 cm x 58 cm x 98 cm (23" x 23" x 38.5")
Estimate: £50,000 - 100,000 †Δ
