A quarter-scale Superman (Christopher Reeve) miniature costume from Richard Donner's superhero film Superman. Miniatures of Superman were often used in the ground-breaking flying sequences.
At the time of its release, Superman was the most expensive film ever made, and it became a critical and financial success. It was nominated for three Academy Awards and awarded a Special Achievement Academy Award for its revolutionary visual effects.
This lot features his iconic blue, red and yellow Kryptonian costume, including a red fabric cape with a yellow "S". The size of the miniature allowed the costume material to be the same as that of the full-size suit worn by Christopher Reeve, which was fabricated from a unique custom weave, made using a now-defunct machine in Austria. The film's miniatures were constructed and filmed by model effects creator Derek Meddings and his team. Medding's other credits include Tim Burton's Batman and six James Bond films, including Oscar-nominated work on Moonraker.
The costume has been sympathetically restored and carefully cleaned. It is displayed in a flying pose on a custom-made body and base. Dimensions (miniature): 58.5 cm x 12 cm x 7 cm (23" x 4.75" x 2.75")
