An EVA suit torch used in the 2007 Danny Boyle sci-fi thriller Sunshine.

Set in the year 2057, Capa (Cillian Murphy) and a team of astronauts are sent to 'reboot' the sun with a nuclear device after it begins to fail, putting Earth into an ice age. When a signal is picked up from their predecessor the Icarus I, they set course for the lost ship to find out what happened to her crew and why her mission failed.

This torch and others like it were used by Capa and the Icarus II's captain, Kaneda (Hiroyuki Sanada), as they work to repair the ship's reflective solar shield. The torch is made of resin and machined aluminium components with four bulbs running along the front. The resin components, forming the main body of the torch, are finished in a steel-coloured paint.

The torch remains operational and is powered by an electricity cable that runs from the bottom of the unit, which would have been obscured during filming of the elaborate extra-vehicular scenes. The torch electronics, which would have used a 48V power supply, remain untested.

Well-used on the production, the item features some wear to the paint finish but remains in good condition.
