Lobby Card Set (8) (11" x 14")
Fine+
Paramount, 1941
A Hollywood director embarks on a journey to experience life as a homeless person for his next film in this screwball comedy written and directed by Preston Sturges. This set includes a complete collection of 8 lobby cards featuring captivating images of Joel McCrea, Veronica Lake, and others. Seven of the cards have been restored to cover an Australian censor stamp with subtle airbrushing in the left border and to address corner pinholes or small edge tears. The card depicting Lake about to kiss McCrea in a crowd remains unrestored and shows border pinholes, discoloration at the top edges, and some sporadic edge wear and smudges.
Sullivan's Travels is a comedy written and directed by Preston Sturges. A satirical take on the film industry, it tells the story of a renowned Hollywood comedy director (Joel McCrea) who, eager to create a socially significant drama, embarks on a journey posing as a tramp to gain real-life experience for his upcoming project. Along the way, he teams up with a struggling actress (Veronica Lake) who joins him on his adventure. The title alludes to Gulliver's Travels, Jonathan Swift's 1726 satirical novel about another voyage of self-discovery.
Sturges was reportedly inspired to create the film by stories of John Garfield briefly living the hobo lifestyle, riding freight trains and hitchhiking across the country in the 1930s. Sturges wrote the script with Joel McCrea specifically in mind, making him the sole actor ever considered for the role of Sullivan.
