A Hopper Bug maquette from Paul Verhoeven’s science fiction action film Starship Troopers. Tippett Studio created maquettes of the film’s various bugs as a three-dimensional representation of the creatures that would be largely digitally animated; they were tools for shot planning, lighting reference, and other purposes. Phil Tippett is credited as Creature Visual Effects Supervisor for the film.Tippett was nominated for Best Visual Effects for his work on this film at the 70th Academy Awards^®.

This Hopper Bug maquette was sculpted by Peter Konig and is cast in resin. Painted a metallic green with red details in order to match the appearance of the Bugs in the film, this maquette also has articulating joints. Each wing is constructed from translucent vacuformed plastic. Each wing is painted with black and green detail. Maquettes were used in the conceptual stages of production as well as during filming to give scale and as a reference for lighting on set. This maquette is able to be deconstructed by detaching its legs and wings – a feature which makes it easier to pack for transport.

Presented on a custom metal and wood base, this maquette is stored in a custom Tippett Studio wood crate. Showing some wear from use, such as scratches in the paint and repairs to some legs with glue, this maquette remains in otherwise great condition. Dimensions (maquette): 27” x 21” x 23 ½”; dimensions (crate): 30” x 16” x 18”
