Four prints of concept artwork for a Republic Cruiser originally created by concept artist Jay Shuster for the production of George Lucas' Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. In the opening scene, the Radiant VII Republic Cruiser carrying Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) docked in a Trade Federation battleship and was promptly destroyed in one of the Neimoidians' first acts of outright violence against Naboo.
Working alongside Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) visual effects production designer Doug Chiang, Shuster created concept art for the Consular-class light cruiser blending original trilogy-era designs for the Millennium Falcon with those for the Tantive IV blockade runner (itself based on early Falcon artwork) from A New Hope. While the final onscreen version of the Radiant VII deviated significantly from Shuster's earliest illustrations, these production copies offer a rarely-seen window into the extensive design process Lucas and his collaborators embarked on prior to filming.
These four sheets depict 11 disparate angles on a Falcon-inspired spacecraft, ranging from bird's eye to underside views. All four sheets are printed with Shuster's signature and dated for April 1996, one sheet is titled "Millenium [sic] Fuel Tanker" and "Millenium [sic] Falcon II," and the untitled sheets are all stamped "OK."
