Hand-drawn ‘Rancor Breakdown’ diagram from Richard Marquand’s sci-fi classic Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi. Phil Tippett headed up the creature department for the film and created many of the aliens in Jabba’s palace, including the Rancor. Lucas’ original idea was to have an actor in a suit portray the Rancor, but Tippett ultimately decided that a rod puppet would work better.Tippett received a Special Achievement Oscar^® for Visual Effects for his work on this film at the 56th Academy Awards^®.

This large piece of sketch paper features diagrams of the original Rancor suit idea. The sketches break the suit down into pieces with arms, feet, and head separated, each with notes describing how an actor would wear the piece, like ‘Access to suit back scales velcro down’ and ‘1 pair of walking arms with supports in hands + wrists for walking on knuckles.’ In the bottom right corner is a sketch showing a ‘Possible’ rod puppet with a puppeteer controlling the Rancor puppet with his hand.

The paper shows minor wear due to age and production use but remains in good condition. Dimensions: 24” x 18 ½” (61 cm x 47 cm)
