An original piece of Rotoscope artwork from the production of Geroge Lucas’ Star Wars sequel, Return of the Jedi.

This hand-drawn rotoscope pencil drawing is a traditional visual effects technique where the animator traces over a projected film image by hand, frame by frame, to modify the image. Rotoscope animation was used in Star Wars to give the lightsaber blades their glow and to animate laser blasts. In the particular frame, numbered ‘7’, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is striking his lightsaber towards Jabba’s guards aboard the skiff at the Pit of Carkoon. The lightsaber has been partially coloured in orange.

The artwork is presented in a custom-built framed display featuring a laser-cut mount board displaying the film’s title and a still from the film. Minor smudges are present on the animation art paper, and there are scratches on the black wooden frame. Otherwise, it remains in good overall condition.
