A Prune Face (Trevor Butterfield) mask from Richard Marquand's Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Designed and sculpted by Tom St. Amand as part of the creature team led by Phil Tippett at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), the Prune Face character was one of many new alien species created for Jedi. Three Prune Face aliens appear in the Rebel briefing room sequence, and it is believed that three masks were made for the production.
The name "Prune Face" originated within the Return of the Jedi creature shop, and the character was later featured in Kenner's 1984 line of Return of the Jedi action figures under that name. The character received an expanded-universe identity as "Orrimaarko" in Star Wars Legends, first published in Galaxy Guide 12: Aliens - Enemies and Allies by West End Games.
The Prune Face design and other Jedi alien creations were revisited in Light & Magic, the ILM-focused Disney+ documentary series. In the episode "I Think I Found My People," visual effects supervisor Phil Tippett reviews numerous ILM creature shop builds from Return of the Jedi, including Prune Face.
Constructed from polyfoam with a latex skin, the mask is hand-painted and fitted with painted yellow acrylic eyes featuring large irises through which the performer could see. A spandex "bib" is sewn to the neck, designed to wrap around the performer's chest and under the arms to secure the mask during filming. The bib is marked "Prune Face #3" and "T. Butterfield," identifying it as the mask worn by performer Trevor Butterfield.
Following production, the mask underwent minor patching and paint-blending restoration and was mounted to a custom display base for stabilization. It remains largely supple, showing minimal surface wear consistent with age and production use. Dimensions: 41 cm x 41 cm x 55 cm (16" x 16" x 21.5")
A printed still of this lot is also included with its sale.
