An R2-D2 dome made for the mockumentary R2-D2: Beneath the Dome during the production of George Lucas' Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. In the mockumentary short - a tongue-in-cheek look at the "real life" of R2-D2 - the loyal droid ill-advisedly went bungee-jumping.
Beneath the Dome was conceived of, co-written, and co-directed by well-known key R2-D2 tech and operator Don Bies with co-direction by Spencer Susser. This fiberglass dome was created specifically for the bungee-jumping sequence by Bies and many of the same crew members who were then working actively in the AOTC droid workshop with the expectation that it would be damaged. It was cast and finished from a mold taken from a droid used in the filming of Lucas' original trilogy. That same mold also produced other domes used during filming of the prequel trilogy.
The dome features its original wooden interior with a strip of tape on its underside, blue and chrome-color paintwork, and square center eye frame from production. However, as expected, the droid sustained damage during the production on Beneath the Dome. As a result, replicas of R2's eye dome, the red panel at the front of the dome, and the holoprojectors were added to complete the look. Additional sympathetic paint touch-up work was also performed.
Even so, this dome exhibits extensive damage in the form of a large crack across the front, other smaller cracks throughout, a loose lens, holes in the wood, and chipped paint. Dimensions: 19" x 17" x 13" (48.5 cm x 43.25 cm x 33 cm)
Estimate: $8,000 - 16,000
