A page of story notes handwritten by George Lucas during the early stages of development on his Star Wars: A New Hope. After he conceived the idea for Star Wars during the filming of his feature debut, THX 1138, Lucas embarked on a treatment for the beloved space opera following the release of his Academy Award®-nominated film American Graffiti circa 1973.

Written in pen in Lucas' distinctive handwriting on a sheet of US letter-size lined paper, these notes consist of several key points regarding the film's intentions, such as that it "must remain fast paced" and be a "fun/adventure"; that it should incorporate "mystical/religious" themes with "intellectualism"; and that it needed to feature a "grand design - goal." Also noted are such key characters as "Luke" asking "Will you teach me?" about "the way of the force," as well as Darth Vader, of whom Lucas writes: "far greater force than Vader - more evil." The paper exhibits a puncture and tearing along its top edge, as well as ink bleed on the reverse from where Lucas used a differently colored pen to cross out one note.
