A set of hand-drawn design drawings for R2-D2’s side leg from George Lucas’ sci-fi classic Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope. The original concept for R2-D2 was to have him move around on a big ball bearing, however this then changed to walking on two legs and having a retractable third leg. R2-D2 wasn’t usually moving in a two-legged state, often only moving when in its three-legged tripod configuration using motorised wheels on the side legs. This design allowed space for Kenny Baker to sit inside and bring the droid to life, whether in motion or at rest.
These designs are a great insight into the production and mechanics of the affable robot for his debut in the very first Star Wars movie. Created by John Stears and his design team during the early stages of design work for the droid, the set is comprised of two illustrations, rendered in pencil on tracing paper. The first sheet of artwork features front and side elevation drawings of the motors, drive mechanism and the wheels used to construct the side legs of R2-D2. The second features a full exploded diagram of the mechanism. Each drawing has dimensions, angles and notes describing materials to be used for manufacture and information about certain features.

This set displays signs of wear including minor stains, creasing around the edges and tears around the edges. However, in spite of this, the set remains in very good condition for its age.
