The Dianoga trash compactor monster from George Lucas’ sci-fi classic Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. Phil Tippett created the Dianoga puppet for a 2nd Unit shot filmed at ILM.

The Dianoga puppet is constructed of stipled latex over foam and features hand punched hair and fine paint detail. The monster was originally designed with a blinking mechanism and the original eyelid wire armature still remains. The eye is made of plastic and features small painted veins along the edges and an interior cornea. The inset pupil can be seen through the plastic covering.

The Dianoga is on its original puppeteering rod, which allowed the head of the creature to be turned side to side. The rod is hidden inside an a black wooden base fabricated by Tippett Studio, with an acrylic cover on the top. The puppet has undergone sympathetic restoration by Tom Spina Designs; areas where the latex skin had deteriorated have been restored with fresh latex and paint-blended over the original foam. It features wear due to production use and age but remains in good condition. Dimensions (display): 41 ½” x 14 ½” x 14 ½” (105 cm x 37 cm x 37 cm)
