A storyboard depicting a lone TIE fighter in space hand-drawn by miniature and optical effects unit illustrator and designer Joe Johnston for the production of George Lucas' Star Wars: A New Hope. Imperial TIE fighters chased the Millennium Falcon after Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and the crew escaped the Death Star. Later, in the climactic Battle of Yavin, TIE fighters - including two working directly in tandem with Darth Vader (David Prowse) - swarmed Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and his fellow Rebels as they sought to destroy the massive planet-killer. Johnston also portrayed a fellow Stormtrooper on the Death Star in an uncredited cameo.

Among the most widely beloved and imitated sequences in science-fiction history, the Battle of Yavin was executed with a combination of live-action photography and model miniatures composited into shots using state-of-the-art optical effects. Johnston's designs for the sequence, as well as many of the film's key vehicles, characters, and setpieces helped shape the film's groundbreaking depiction of technology and space. A New Hope ultimately earned six Academy Awards®, including for both Best Art Direction-Set Direction and Best Visual Effects.
