A pair of C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) hand plates made during the production of George Lucas' Star Wars: A New Hope. As C-3PO had a static face and was unable to make sure of expression, much of Daniel's performance was informed by exaggerated movements and communication through his hands such as throwing up his hands or gesticulating during exposition.

For A New Hope, the loyal droid's costume hands were created by applying vacuum-formed plastic backplates over metal fingers. For the following films in the original trilogy, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, 3PO's costume instead featured cast, single-piece glove-style hands.

This pair of vacuum-formed plastic hand plates originates from the collection of Gerard Bourke, a member of the props team on the production. Both are finished in gold-color via "Steinarting," a finishing process where layers of gray, then silver-color, and finally gold-color were sprayed to produce the appearance of metal. The right hand plate features the wrist area cut out as it would be for use, but the rest of that hand plate and the other remains untrimmed. The plastic exhibits cracking in some areas, the metallic gold-color paint exhibits only small remnants, and the finish has largely blackened from age and exposure.
