A rare red low-altitude Death Star model miniature surface panel from George Lucas' Star Wars: A New Hope and Richard Marquand's Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. This panel was originally designed and constructed by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) as part of the vast miniature Death Star set for A New Hope, specifically for shots in which Rebel fighters flew close to its massive surface.
It is believed to have later been repainted red for reuse as a port construction panel on the Death Star II in Return of the Jedi. Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams), Wedge Antilles (Denis Lawson), and their fellow Rebel pilots entered through a red unfinished port on the space station's surface during their final climactic assault on the space station. Multiple locations on the Death Star II's superstructure were painted red to indicate ongoing construction.
This foam panel is cast with various lines and static greebles to appear mechanical. Its underside, which is unpainted, shows evidence of adhesive residue from being affixed to the larger set as well as minor chipping from on-set use, handling, and age.
