A screen-matched, light-up, distressed 20th century space module cryoship model miniature from Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek: The Next Generation. In the Season 1 finale "The Neutral Zone," the Enterprise-D observed an old space module from 20th Century Earth that held refrigeration pods with three surviving, albeit frozen, humans. This miniature screen-matches based on the carbon scorching and the manner in which the solar panels are distressed.
This episode was written by Maurice Hurley right before the 1988 Writers Guild of America strike and re-introduced the Romulans from The Original Series with makeup designed by Michael Westmore. Additionally, it debuted the Romulan Warbird, which was designer Andrew Probert's final work. Due to the strike, the original plans for a two-part episode were postponed until the second season, where the unknown entity that destroyed the Federation and Romulan outposts was revealed to be the Borg.
Designed by Rick Sternbach and Michael Okuda, this model miniature is made of fiberglass with various greebles throughout the hull. Painted in shades of beige, it features two solar panel wings with one blue side and one yellow side, as well as various decals including "U.S.S. Birdseye" in yellow and identification number "4077" in black. The miniature features four numbered chambers with hand-painted details to appear struck by space debris and scorched. Also present are two small lights mounted near its base, as well as internal wiring accessible from the bottom rocket. While the lights remain functional, the model does not currently feature a control system for them.
Also included are two additional greebles, and a portion of solar panel. It has a production-cut hole (unthreaded) at the bottom for mounting. It comes with a custom-built display base that cradles the miniature. Production intentionally distressed this model miniature to appear damaged and covered in grime. This lot exhibits lifted adhesive and chipped paint. Dimensions: 25.5" x 27" x 4" (64.75 cm x 68.5 cm x 10.25 cm)
