Preliminary artwork for a matte painting of the USS Enterprise's cargo bay hand-painted by renowned storyboard artist and production illustrator Andrew Probert for Robert Wise's Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) boarded the USS Enterprise via an airlock in its three-deck-high cargo bay, the first time the vast space was depicted in the Star Trek franchise. The sequence was achieved by combining live-action model photography and a matte painting, also created by Probert.
This artwork was created by Probert hand-painting elements over a photograph of Starfleet crew in the ship's cargo bay and is rendered in mixed media on illustration board. It features a signature and date "6-13-79" seamlessly worked into one of the platforms, making it appear as though it is part of the architecture. The board is hand-marked "EA-1" in white pencil and lined with tape along its borders. The lot shows evidence of wear consistent with use, handling, and age; including the photographic elements, which the matte prelim was originally painted to color-match, exhibiting yellowing from age.
