A display of a screen-matched, light-up, battle-damaged USS Enterprise hull insert section model miniature from Nicholas Meyer's Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, its immediate sequel, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. After taking control of the USS Reliant, Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban) opened fire on the Enterprise's secondary hull and severely crippled the ship.
While models of the Enterprise from the production of Star Trek: The Motion Picture were used throughout filming, this ornately detailed, hand-painted model miniature was constructed by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) to appear specifically battle-damaged during the attack sequence in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. It was then reused for insert shots of the ship in both Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
Multiple points along this model hull's top and sides, including around its battle-damaged section and its many lights, screen-match to shots in all three films, including: when the Enterprise fired a torpedo from behind the Reliant during the Battle of the Mutara Nebula in STII: TWOK; when James T. Kirk (William Shatner) fired a torpedo on Kruge's (Christopher Lloyd) Klingon Bird-of-Prey in STIII: TSFS; and when the Enterprise fired a torpedo modified to track Chang's (Christopher Plummer) cloaked Bird-of-Prey above Camp Khitomer in STVI: TUC.
This electronic display consists of the hull section model miniature and two plastic-paneled wood wing pieces with miniature illuminating spotlights, all mounted to a particle board base marked "These bulbs are 3 1/2 volts max!" designed to control small lights installed throughout the model. The electronic base features two Starfleet emblems and five switches labeled "Main," "Interior Lights," "Exterior Lights," "Arm Photon," and "Fire Torpedo" which activate various illuminating sections of the hull. The "Fire Torpedo" button activates a torpedo-firing flash and requires charging between operations.
The model is constructed of resin, wood, paper, and paneled plastic with internal steel and aluminum components, some of which are exposed around the battle-damaged area. It is painted gray and blue with red, blue, white, black, and yellow decals applied throughout, and lined with lights. The model miniature has undergone sympathetic restoration to repair and reattach sections that had previously cracked and broken off, as well as repainting around its torpedo-launching area. The lot exhibits some signs of use and handling, including scuffed and discolored paint, loose paneling, and scratched wood. Dimensions: 55" x 58" x 30" (139.75 cm x 147.5 cm x 76.25 cm)
