An LCARS warp core display made for the production of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Panels are visible in the USS Defiant's engine room in the episode One Little Ship. Before the era of LCD panels, prop makers for the many incarnations of Star Trek needed an elegant solution in order to show a futuristic "screen" that appeared like a functioning display. This piece is made up of a light box, LCARS panel, and a piece of plexiglass.
This amazing LCARS panel functions by utilizing linear polarization. Inside the light box, fluorescent lights sit behind a round polarized filter that spins via a belt. The the polarization of the lens sends the light out in different direction toward the LCARS panel which is covered with diffusion paper. This diffusion paper lets light through to give the panel a soft, back-lit appearance. Attached to portions of the diffusion paper are small polarized sheets. These sheets are patterned in a way that causes the LCARS panel to appear as though it has a moving display when the light from the spinning polarized filter hits them from different directions.
The design of the LCARS panel was completed by hand using flexible rolls of gel which were applied in the desired pattern on the back of the smoked plexiglass. Diffusion paper is then used to cover the gel and attached to the smoked plexiglass with electrical tape. This electrical tape is a sign that these panels were used in later seasons of Deep Space Nine as older panels have their paper attached with adhesive spray. In this case, the display on this LCARS panel shows the Star Trek universe’s most beloved mode of transport, the Warp Core. The electronics of the light box are fully functioning with the inside of the box being marked with the number three. This piece shows some signs of wear from use and storage but remains in overall good condition.
