A mechanical tentacle used in the production of the comic book action-adventure ‘Spiderman 2’. Having given up the superhero life to try and focus on his day jobs and college career, Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is called back to duty to fight Dr Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina), who after a tragic failed nuclear fusion experiment becomes the nefarious Doctor Octopus.
This tentacle was used in the famous fight scene as Spiderman and Doc Ock duel on top of an elevated subway train. At a key point in the fight, Ock grabs Spidey around the chest with one of his tentacles and smashes him through the train’s door. A quick shot shows Spiderman holding onto a bar within the train’s cabin, the tentacle unravelling and recoiling. This tentacle was used for this specific shot.

The tentacle consists of a snake-like arm made of dozens of vertebrate-like sections, all connected by long wires that allow the piece to bend and curl. This is attached to 12 wires which feed back to three levers—one long, two short—that control the movement of the tentacle. The tentacle and controls are connected to a large plank of wood, painted black.

In a good production-used condition with some wear through production use, the tentacle is 91cm (36”), with the wires about 172cm (68”) in length. The long lever is 53cm (21”) long and the shorter two are 18cm (7”), while the wood plank measures approximately 119cm x 43cm (47” x 17”).
