A piece of concept art used in the creation of the character "Sil" from Roger Donaldson’s 1995 sci-fi horror Species. A message from outer space gives humanity the code needed to create a human-alien hybrid. But when their creation, Sil (Natasha Henstridge), reaches puberty, the docile human turns into a sex-driven beast looking for one thing… to reproduce.
Acquired from the collection of esteemed visual effects co-ordinator Richard Edlund, this piece of artwork portraying the alien-human hybrid mid-transformation was used for the visualisation of the scene in which she is about to give birth in the Los Angeles sewers.
This original piece of artwork shows Sil crouching as she screams during the transformation. The piece is rendered in colour pencil on grey paper. Sil can be seen with transparent limbs showing the make-up of her transformed skeleton. Her right arm, still mostly human, shows her natural skin tone, with changes in structure forming across her shoulder and forearm. The piece is marked "B" in the top right corner.
The piece is presented in a stunning bespoke framed display featuring a gothic frame, a description of the piece and the film's title artwork. It remains in an excellent condition.
