Barf’s (John Candy) trooper uniform from Mel Brooks’s 1987 sci-fi comedy, Spaceballs. In this Star Wars parody, Lone Star (Bill Pullman) and his sidekick Barf (John Candy) must protect Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) from the evil Lord Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis). This control panel can be found aboard the command center of the Spaceball One, and comes from the scene in which Dark Helmet pursues Eagle V through space at Ludicrous Speed.
Barf along with Lone Starr dress in trooper uniforms after stealing them from henchman guards after parking on the planet Spaceball. Disguised as troopers they locate Princess Vespa and Dot Matrix in a remote prison cell. This costume consists of an off-white jumpsuit, a black helmet and a stunt rifle. The jumpsuit is made from a stretchy synthetic fabric and features various sized black plastic pieces, black ‘tubes’ covered in black fabric around the arms and legs and a zip fastening running down the back. Hand stitching is present on the back seam of the garment, indicating a hole was originally there for Barf’s dog tail to poke through. The helmet is a round ball like shape and is made from acrylic with a yellow construction hat attached on the inside. Inside the helmet is a plastic stabilising liner and chin strap which would sit on the actors head and stop it from moving whilst filming. Made from rubber, the rifle is moulded from a Calico M-100 and has painted silver section to give it a more sci-fi feel. The gun has a moulded rubber Maglite mounted as a sight, and the weapon is considered a parody of the famous storm trooper gun from Star Wars. The rifle also comes with a shoulder strap.
The jumpsuit has minor marks on the front and back and the rifle features wear to the metallic paint and slight damage at the front. The helmet has several cracks to the lower edge, chips to the surface of the acrylic and paint marks on the back. However, in spite of this wear, the costume remains in good production-used condition.
