Four beautiful consecutive production drawings of Mickey Mouse, Pluto, and the Judge from Society Dog Show, Walt Disney Animation Studios, 1939, and the sequence they capture is one of the most gloriously physical bits of comedy the short has to offer.

The film, directed by Bill Roberts from a story by Jack Kinney and produced by Walt Disney, follows Mickey's ill-fated attempt to enter Pluto in a society dog show, with a roster of animators that reads like a golden-age honour roll: Al Eugster, Norman Ferguson, Shamus Culhane, John Lounsbery, and Les Clark among them. These four drawings land at timecode 5:16, right in the heart of the chaos: Pluto, having been examined and prodded to his absolute limit, turns on the Judge, who in attempting to get clear, crashes straight into Mickey and sends him flying.

Four drawings. About a second of screen time, if that. And yet each sheet is packed with the full weight and momentum of the scene, the Judge's bulk, Mickey airborne, the energy of two characters colliding in a single irreversible instant. The pink construction lines track the volume of the figures through each position, and the sequence annotation, drawing numbers 215, 221, 225, and 235 visible lower right on each sheet, confirms these are pulled directly from the production run, not adjacents or extras. Drawing 235 carries the production note "335P Pluto" in blue pencil, a routing annotation confirming the layer assignment for this exact frame. One sheet also carries the initial of animator approval, lower right. These are working drawings in the full sense: planning tools for one of the most technically demanding comedy beats in the film.

Single character drawings from Society Dog Show do surface from time to time, but a sequence of four drawings tracking a single comic action through three characters, with annotation intact and in perfect condition throughout, is a much rarer proposition. The sheets also border on layout drawings in character, carrying positioning notes and shadow outlines alongside the animation, which adds considerably to their documentary value. What makes this set so extraordinary is that everything has survived together and in this condition. The annotation is intact. The sequence is unbroken. The drawings are clean and vivid, the construction lines still singing with purpose, the figures still absolutely alive in the middle of their magnificent collision. You are looking at the exact moment the animators solved this gag, the physical intelligence of it mapped out position by position across four sheets of paper. That is not something that comes along often, if at all. A wonderful set representing the finest in animation art.
