Lobby Card (11" x 14")
Very Fine-
Paramount, 1934
When a respectable middle-class couple sets off on a cross-country road trip, they share expenses with a quirky pair of companions, all of whom are unaware that the car carries embezzled money. This classic comedy, directed by Leo McCarey, features a truly impressive cast of talented comedians.
The accompanying card showcases Mary Boland, Charlie Ruggles, George Burns, W.C. Fields, and Gracie Allen. It is unrestored and has a small tear in the upper right corner, which has been reinforced with clear tape on the back. Additionally, there is a tiny crease along the upper border. Despite these imperfections, the vibrant color tints remain fresh and reflect the outstanding quality of the lobby cards produced by Paramount during this period.
"Six of a Kind "is a pre-Code comedy directed by Leo McCarey, starring Charles Ruggles, Mary Boland, W.C. Fields, George Burns, and Gracie Allen. A critical and box office hit, the film is known for the iconic pocket billiards scene in which Fields explains how he earned the nickname, "Honest John." The opening credit sequence introduces the six main characters through images of playing cards, each featuring a joker, followed by portraits pairing Ruggles with Boland, Burns with Allen, and Fields with Skipworth. Film historian Wes D. Gehring notes that "Six of a Kind" introduced a popular "on-the-road" story theme, which was later featured in Frank Capra's 1934 romantic comedy, "It Happened One Night," starring Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable.
