An exceptional original hand-painted production cel setup featuring a wax-lipped Homer Simpson from Season 8, Episode 9, "El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer (The Mysterious Voyage of Homer)", first broadcast on January 5, 1997.
This episode remains one of the most inventive and surreal in The Simpsons' history. After Homer attends the Springfield Chili Cook-Off and unwisely consumes Chief Wiggum's "Guatemalan Insanity Peppers," he embarks on a hallucinatory journey of self-discovery guided by a mystical Coyote Spirit, voiced by country legend Johnny Cash. Combining psychedelic visuals, spiritual themes, and the show's trademark absurdity, it became an instant classic, a perfect collision of humour, humanity, and existential reflection.
This production cel setup captures one of its most unforgettable sequences: Homer's reckless attempt to conquer the chili challenge by coating his mouth and lips with melted candle wax (he drank the whole candle). As he proudly demonstrates his "solution" to the onlookers, Wiggum dryly remarks, "It's not my job to talk people out of killing themselves." It's a scene that perfectly encapsulates Homer's blend of determination, stupidity, and misplaced pride, a defining moment from The Simpsons' golden age.
The cel setup itself is remarkable, comprising multiple layers with Homer painted on a separate acetate sheet, elevated within the acid-free mount to create a striking three-dimensional effect. The townsfolk behind him are rendered on distinct cel layers, their horrified expressions adding both depth and humour to the composition.
Bearing the official 20th Century Fox seal, this is an outstanding and highly desirable piece from one of The Simpsons' most celebrated and artistically ambitious episodes. A rare opportunity to own a slice of Springfield's strangest and most brilliant adventure. Dimensions (mounted): 37 cm x 45.75 cm (14.5" x 18")
