325. Wendy Torrance's (Shelley Duvall) SFX Bloodletting Knife

Our expert's notes

Wendy Torrance's (Shelley Duvall) SFX bloodletting knife from Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. Wendy used her knife to cut her crazed husband Jack's (Jack Nicholson) hand when he reached through her bathroom door to try and unlock it.
The image of Wendy pressed into the corner of her bathroom, clutching a kitchen knife as her murderous husband hacks into the door with an axe, remains one of the most enduring from the movie, and indeed all Hollywood history. Created for shots in which Wendy stabbed or cut Jack, such as when his blood spurted onto the door, this bloodletting knife originates from the collection of a member of the production's SFX team. It is coming to public auction for the first time.
The knife features a wooden handle and a metal blade with a hollowed-out section along its edge. Stage blood would have been released through this section, connected via an internal tube to a notch in the handle, which once housed a blood vial.
Accompanying the knife is a bloodied rag, which originates from the production, but is not seen clearly onscreen in the final cut. The blade shows evidence of some rusting, while handle shows evidence of paint wear. Dimensions (knife): 15.25" x 1.5" x 0.75" (38.5 cm x 4 cm x 2 cm)
Edged, bladed or blunt object; see notice on blades in the Buyer's Guide.
