Shazam stands square in the frame here, the original Captain Marvel in his red suit with the lightning bolt across the chest, the World's Mightiest Mortal who arrives the moment young Billy Batson says the magic word. This is an original production cel of Shazam from The Kid Super Power Hour with Shazam!, the 1981 Filmation series that gave the character a Saturday morning home.

The cel is placed over a hand-painted production background of a blue rocky cave, the loose washes of the studio's scenery painters reading as crag and shadow behind the figure. The production notation runs along the top edge, scene marker SH8 at upper centre and the number 56129 at upper right, with the top peg holes intact. The "SH" code ties the cel directly to its Shazam sequence.

Filmation built its house on this kind of work right through the seventies and into the eighties, turning out the Saturday morning serials a whole generation grew up in front of. The studio rendered Captain Marvel in the clean, bold line and flat saturated colour that ran through all its superhero output, the lightning bolt and the cape worked up to read instantly on a small screen at speed.

For collectors who remember sitting close to the set on a Saturday for the Filmation hour, a hand-painted Shazam cel from the studio's own production line is a piece of exactly that morning.
