A screen-matched, bloodied Ghostface mask from Wes Craven's Scream. The masked killer Ghostface hunted Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and her friends on the anniversary of her mother's murder. Based on the trim line of the mask's right eye and the way the hood pinches the mask on the right side of the jaw, this mask screen-matches to the close-up shot where Casey Becker (Drew Barrymore) removed the mask from her killer with her bloodied left hand, and the scene where Ghostface was about to stab Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) in the house while he watched a film.
Scream won various awards, including three Saturn Awards® in 1997, and has been praised for its originality, meta commentary, humor, and ensemble cast, all instrumental to the film's success. The Ghostface mask became the final design choice for all subsequent Scream costumes and remains one of the most recognised characters in horror films with an enduring legacy.
Production used two types of masks during filming: the opening murder used a design by effects studio KNB EFX, while later scenes used commercial PVC masks produced by Fun World's Fantastic Faces line. The insert shot of the mask being pulled off by Becker utilised a Fun World mask, which is where the blood on this mask originated from. This is the first time a mask of this style has ever been offered.
This ghastly white face Fun World mask originated from the collection of the film's first assistant director, Nicholas Mastandrea, who has kept it in his possession since production wrapped. This mask is coming to auction for the first time. Made of soft PVC, it features black mesh inside the eyes and a black cotton shroud with remnants of stage blood along the forehead and brow from the mask removal scene. The underside of the chin features the Fun World copyright stamped into the PVC. This lot exhibits discolouration from age.
Additional Provenance: Letters of Authenticity from Mastandrea and prop master John Paul "J.P." Jones.
A printed still of this lot is also included with its sale.
