Rosy Ryan's (Sarah Miles) flying parasol from David Lean's Academy Award-winning Ryan's Daughter. Rosy Ryan lost her parasol over the cliffs at the film's beginning. It was picked up from the sea by a passing rowboat and given back to her by Michael (John Mills). The imagery of the parasol flying through the air was also used in the film's posters and other promotional material.
This parasol has several sections that were repaired during production. Lean, ever the perfectionist, insisted that the shot be redone many times, and each time, the parasol had to be fished out of the sea and repaired. Areas of the canopy have been stitched back together, and the shaft has been repaired with tape.
The black-and-white parasol has a wooden shaft and a metal handle. It remains in a fragile condition.
