This collection of props was used for the scene during the 1975 world championship at Watkins Glen, as drivers and spectators are left shocked after witnessing the horrific crash of a Formula One driver. The body itself is made from foam with an internal metal armature allowing for it to be posed, and the head is made from foam and silicone. There is realistic silicone flesh and gore around the neck of the head and body, with the head complete with a bloody balaclava and white crash helmet. The body is dressed in a heavily distressed white OMP racing suit with a blue and orange vertical stripe along the chest and various embroidered sponsor patches including ‘Ford’, ‘Goodyear’ and ‘Elf’. A white polo-neck jumper (UK women’s size 14) is worn underneath the racing suit, and features fake blood around the collar and shoulders. The driver’s body is also wearing a pair of white OMP gloves with a leather grip and a pair of black OMP racing boots (UK men’s size 9 ½) with a label in the tongue reading “In compliance with FIA standard 8856-2000”.
Interestingly, the boots also feature a crossed-out name label of British Touring Car and former Formula Three racer Rob Austin, who appears in the film portraying Formula One driver Brett Lunger. The suit displays signs of mould as a result of its time in storage, although it has been thoroughly cleaned. Distressed for use in the production, both the body and head remain in very good production-used condition, with the body measuring approximately 170 x 80 x 48cm (67 x 31.5 x 19”) and the head measuring approximately 32 x 25 x 29cm (12.5 x 10 x 11.5”).
