A McLaren insert filming cockpit used in the production of Ron Howard’s 2013 sports-drama, Rush. Based on a true story, the film follows racing icons Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) and James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) during their infamous 1976 Formula One season. As their rivalry on and off the track begins to take its toll, a near-fatal injury leaves Lauda fighting for the championship and Hunt in pole position to take the title.

This cockpit would have been used to film interior shots of the McLaren M23 driven by notorious playboy James Hunt during the controversial 1976 world championship season. The cockpit frame is made from aluminium and boxed steel with the classic luminous orange McLaren coloured plates located along the top, and formed the interior of the car. The dashboard is fitted behind the steering wheel, which features three dials measuring pressure, water temperature and RPM. The cockpit also features a manual gear selector and an array of switches and wires that extend along the side of the body. A blue Willans safety harness is located inside and the pedals are connected to hydraulics at the front of the frame and exposed to allow the camera access. The steering wheel is connected to an assembly at the front of the car that is still operational. The cockpit measures approximately 202 x 102 x 65cm (79.5 x 40 x 25.5”) and remains in very good production-used condition.
