A projector from RKO Studios. The famed film production company was responsible for many heralded classics during Hollywood’s Golden Age.

This two-reel style projector is made of thick, black coated steel. A motor with a single switch marked ‘Forward’ and ‘Reverse’ is included separately. The door is covered over in black tape and has been removed from the device. A glass lens encased in a metal frame is also included separately. The projector would use a standard movement though one is not currently present.

This model of projector was built specifically for RKO Studios and dates to circa 1952, or possibly earlier. A photo exists from the production of Androcles and the Lion (RKO 1952) showing this model of projector in the background. It is believed that 4 or 5 of these units were built. The projector is similar to units built by Harry Cunningham for Mighty Joe Young (1949), and RKO is believed to have used rear projection techniques dating back to the 1930s. The projector was also used on numerous projects at Tippett Studio. Dimensions (projector): 22" x 17” x 11 ¼” (56 cm x 43 cm x 29 cm); dimensions (lens): 5 ¾” x 3 ¾” x 3 ¼” (15 cm x 10 cm x 8 cm); dimensions (motor): 7” x 4” x 4” (18 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm)
