A set of head Wheeler stunt wheel appliances from Walter Murch's dark fantasy sequel Return to Oz. The troublemaking Wheelers had wheels for hands and feet and terrorised Dorothy (Fairuza Balk) on the orders of the wicked witch Mombi (Jean Marsh). This set of Wheeler wheels originally belonged to stunt performer Colin Skeaping, who performed as one of the head wheelers alongside Pons Maar, and also notably featured as Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) double in the Star Wars franchise.
The two front wheel appliances each comprise a rubber wheel with silver-painted plastic hubcaps attached to a black-painted metal frame designed to fit around the performer's arms. The frames have foam padding around the top, with plastic handle grips (one red and one blue) and a brake lever. "Colin" is written in black pen on the blue-handled frame.
The two back wheel appliances also feature rubber wheels, but these include a mechanism that only allows them to move forward. Their hubcaps are attached to a black-painted metal-and-plastic frame designed to fit around the performer's calves via webbing and clip closures at the top. The leg appliances also feature a pair of Rancor® high-top trainers (size 8), with "Colin" handwritten in blue pen on the back of each shoe. These are fastened with screws to the frame's base and a pair of grey woollen socks with the toes cut off. A hubcap is missing from the red-handled front wheel and the back-left wheel, and all the wheels exhibit significant paint wear, scratches and minor dents from production use. The brake on the red-handled front wheel is slightly stiff. Dimensions (front): 86.5 cm x 29 cm x 11.5 cm (34" x 11.5" x 4.5"); (back): 74 cm x 31 cm x 15.5 cm (29.25" x 12.25" x 6.25")
Contains mechanical components; see mechanical notice in the Buyer's Guide.
Estimate: £5,000 - 10,000 M
