Ren and Stimpy seated at a boardroom table is the sort of setup that immediately feels gloriously inappropriate. The energy coming off this classic setup is pure, distilled Ren and Stimpy at their most gleefully unhinged.

John Kricfalusi's creation for Nickelodeon was one of those rare shows that rewired the brains of everyone who watched it. The Ren and Stimpy Show arrived in August 1991 as part of the original Nicktoons lineup alongside Doug and Rugrats, and it was immediately, unmistakably different. The show follows Ren Höek, a violently temperamental chihuahua with a hair-trigger temper and delusions of grandeur, and Stimpson J. Cat, known simply as Stimpy, a good-natured, magnificently dim-witted cat whose cheerful obliviousness serves as both foil and catalyst to Ren's perpetual fury. Together they lurch from one chaotic situation to the next, variously employed as astronauts, lumberjacks, and everything in between, their friendship somehow surviving every indignity the writers could devise. Where other Saturday morning animation played it safe, Spümcø went in the opposite direction entirely, drawing on Bob Clampett's rubber-limbed expressionism and the gleeful wrongness of the best 1950s theatrical shorts, then pushing both several stops further than anyone expected a children's network to allow. The result was something genuinely anarchic, visually extraordinary, and frequently very funny indeed. The controversy that eventually saw Kricfalusi depart in 1992 is well documented, but the work from the Spümcø years, particularly the first two seasons, has only grown in stature since.

This cel dates from that early, canonical period. It carries the official Studio Art Programme seal and comes with a printed lithographic background, presented on a 12-field acetate with bottom peg holes intact and in excellent condition throughout. Production code RS-408 is visible in the lower margin, placing it within the fourth season episode "It's a Dog's Life".

For anyone who grew up with this show, the nostalgia surrounding it runs genuinely deep. Original production material from the Spümcø years does not surface with any frequency, and a two-character setup like this, with both leads present and the comic timing locked in the frame, is exactly the kind of piece that finds the collector who has been waiting for it.
