A palace guard tunic worn in Rob Reiner’s fantasy adventure The Princess Bride. A grandfather (Peter Falk) attempts to cheer his ill grandson (Fred Savage) up by reading him the fairy tale story ‘The Princess Bride’. The story follows farmhand Westley (Cary Elwes) who must rescue his one true love Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright) from her loathsome fiancé Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon).
This style of tunic and others like it were worn by members of Prince Humperdinck’s Royal Guards in various scenes throughout the movie, in and around the Florin Palace. The tunics are notably seen when Prince Humperdinck introduces Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright) to the crowd for the first time. Made from a light blue synthetic wool, the long tunic features an embroidered yellow eagle’s head patch with red eyes and tongue in front of a navy chevron, and would have originally fastened at the side with string through a set of four rivet holes either side. Inside the costume is a ‘Bermans and Nathans’ label (now part of world famous costumers Angels) that reads very faintly ‘Princess Bride’. The tunic displays signs of production use including rivets and a string missing and minor marks on the piece. However, the tunic remains in very good condition and has no size marked.
