A superb original production cel of Porco and Fio from Studio Ghibli's 1992 masterpiece, Porco Rosso. This cel embodies the film's emotional centre, Porco battered, smiling, held by the young engineer Fio who refused to let him disappear quietly into the Adriatic.

Miyazaki's film is one of the strangest and most personal things he ever made: a melancholic, sun-baked fable about a First World War ace cursed into the body of a pig, operating as a freelance bounty hunter over the Adriatic in the 1930s while fascism rises on the mainland and the world he knew recedes behind him. It sits apart from everything else in the Ghibli catalogue, featuring a tired adult and the question of whether people like him deserve to come back to the world. The answer arrives here, at the close of the final fight, in Fio's arms.

The cel is acetate with original top peg registration holes intact, and is presented against a production background. The decision to hold Porco and Fio together here locks the image into a single irreducible composition, which is exactly what the scene requires. Some waviness to the cel surface, consistent with age and storage, but the paint and linework remain clear. The production code B22 is visible in the top right corner.
