Grommet's (BoJesse Christopher) surfboard from Kathryn Bigelow's Point Break. Grommet, the youngest member of Bodhi's (Patrick Swayze) gang of surfers-turned-bank robbers, The Ex-Presidents, carried and rode his signature green flame-pattern surfboard throughout the film, including when it presided over a game of night football initiated by FBI agent Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves).
Grommet's distinctive board was designed as a reflection of his wild, high-intensity approach to both surfing and crime by legendary surfboard shaper and Spyder Surfboards founder, Dennis Jarvis, who, as the film's surfing advisor, also coached the key cast on how to ride waves. After design approval by director Bigelow, Jarvis created three Grommet boards for the production, with this board believed to be the only surviving example. It originates from a crew member on the production.
Custom-built from mixed media, this 6 ft. 2 in.-long shortboard features green flames hand-painted on its deck beneath three traction pads, black trim painted around the edges, and Spyder Surfboards logos on each size. Following production, it underwent sympathetic restoration to one of its three fins. The board exhibits streaking, nicks, and some lifting to its pads from production use and age.
