Johnny Utah's (Keanu Reeves) surfboard from Kathryn Bigelow's Point Break. Rookie FBI agent Utah went undercover in the local surfing community to investigate a string of summer bank robberies. To gain acceptance, Utah purchased his own surfboard and eventually learned to surf it under the guidance of local waitress Tyler Endicott (Lori Petty), attracting the interest of surfer and crime boss Bodhi (Patrick Swayze).
Several surfboards were created for the production by professional surfer and board shaper Dennis Jarvis. Working from basic direction provided by director Kathryn Bigelow, Jarvis designed Utah's board to symbolize the character's personal risk as he immerses himself deeper into an unfamiliar and dangerous world. The first boards Jarvis produced featured a dark logo at the nose, which Bigelow felt did not stand out sufficiently on camera. Subsequent boards were produced with a white-background logo, and the original boards were updated with vinyl decals featuring the same design to match the newly created versions. These decals can be seen peeling in some shots in the film, including a scene in which Utah paddles in the water after his leash breaks.
In addition to fabricating the surfboards, Jarvis served as a technical advisor and taught the actors - including Reeves, Swayze, and Petty - how to surf prior to filming. All three performers had varying levels of experience in the water.
The Utah boards were used for both main unit filming with the principal cast and second unit filming, where more technical coverage and critical action sequences were captured. Each board was constructed to be suitable for both the actors and high-performance professional surfers.
Following the film's release, the board was given away in a promotional raffle. Several years later, the raffle winner contacted Jarvis as the original maker and agreed to sell the board back to him.
This custom-designed tri-fin surfboard is constructed of polystyrene foam with a resin and fiberglass laminate. It features a black "Dance with the Universe" logo near the nose and a "Snake Wave" logo on the deck. The number "#02541" is hand-etched in black ink on the underside beneath the laminate layer. The board exhibits production-consistent wear, including denting on the bottom, faded ink, and areas of discoloration. Also included is a letter of authenticity from Dennis Jarvis. Dimensions: 92" x 22" x 7.25" (233.75 cm x 56 cm x 18.25 cm)
